About this Design
The composition stages a restrained, tactile interior where material honesty defines atmosphere. A freestanding, polished white bathtub anchors the left field; its continuous curvature reads as a luminous object against the darker, textured concrete floor. The floor’s micro-variation—subtle aggregate, hand-trowelled undulation—catches the LED track’s warm grazing light and returns faint specular highlights rather than mirror-like reflections, preserving a grounded, bristled concrete character. The ceiling is painted dark grey to compress verticality and concentrate the perceived illumination plane near the top-left track, sharpening the directional intent without introducing hard spots.
Terrazzo clads the lower third of the walls with a deliberately coarse, veined aggregate pattern that bridges the tonal gap between concrete and plaster. Its matte-polished finish responds to the soft LED track with low-contrast sheen along the upper edge, creating a thin luminous band that visually lifts the vanity plane. Upper walls are finished in a warm, breathable plaster—slightly chalky and diffusive—muting reflections and scattering ambient light to ensure the room reads as evening-soft rather than theatrically lit.
On the right, a floating wooden vanity introduces warm grain and tactile relief. The walnut veneer is selected for a straight, continuous figure so the drawer edges read as horizontal planes; the white inset countertop sits minimal and crisp, providing a counterpoint to the wood’s texture. The inset sink integrates with precise edge radii that catch concise, gentle highlights from the track. Fixtures are finished with a restrained specular—enough to read metal under the soft lighting but restrained to avoid glaring reflections. A large frameless mirror above the vanity reflects the subdued room, showing accurate, softened highlights and mirroring the ceiling’s darkness; its edge remains minimal so it functions as a depth device rather than a bright light source.
Lighting strategy emphasizes a single directional LED track mounted in the top-left corner, producing a narrow, warm wash across the terrazzo and tub while the remainder of light is ambient and muted. Shadows are intentionally soft and low-contrast, achieved by balancing indirect bounce from the plaster and low-intensity fill from concealed sources, preserving a calm, meditative evening mood. The overall palette—dark concrete, warm walnut, neutral terrazzo and white sanitaryware—creates a disciplined, material-forward interior that reads both modern and quietly domestic.
