About this Design
The composition privileges material honesty and tectonic clarity. A continuous white built‑in bench runs the length of the primary wall, its low datum reinforcing the room’s horizontal coastal orientation. The bench’s crisp geometry contrasts with the soft plump white cushions, which introduce controlled irregularity and invite occupation. Recessed arched and rectangular niches are carved into the plaster field; their timber backs and rounded reveals create a warm counterpoint to the cool plaster while framing artifacts — carved masks, two brightly painted parrot sculptures, and neatly stacked firewood — so each object reads as an intentional sculptural accent rather than clutter.
Structurally the exposed wooden lattice ceiling functions both as a pattern field and as a subsurface for suspended services. The grid’s oak tones and visible grain provide a direct material link to the round wooden stools, low side tables, and the recessed shelving. Three glass pendants hang within the lattice, their clear globes and brass fitments producing concentrated highlights that register as small, warm reflections on the polished concrete floor. The concrete slab, finished to a smooth polish, reflects diffuse morning light and the low flame of the recessed gas fireplace; these reflections are soft-edged, elongating the vertical shadows cast by stools and plants and amplifying the room’s calm luminosity.
Lighting strategy emphasizes diffuse ambient daylight from large glazing to the left, producing soft, directional illumination that sculpts the tactile plaster walls and reveals subtle imperfections and hairline cracks—an intentional patina that adds depth. The fireplace introduces a low‑intensity flicker, anchoring the composition visually and thermally without overpowering the daylight. Vegetal accents—two potted tropical plants—are placed at the seating terminals to frame views and add biophilic contrast: their glossy leaves catch specular highlights and cast organic shadows across the bench. Material palette remains restrained—white textured plaster, warm oak, smooth concrete, woven planters—allowing form, light, and object placement to define mood: a serene, sunlit morning with layered textures, quiet rhythm, and carefully composed material warmth.
